Elder Care & Veteran Affairs
The population of veterans is a large and influential one for South Carolina. As a veteran and chair of the South Carolina Democratic Party Veterans Caucus, I will focus on job training for vets, the provision of quality health care for vets that meets their physical and mental health needs, and programs for the successful reintegration of veterans into their communities.
Many of us are currently having to care for an aging parent, relative, husband or wife, and I know first-hand the challenges facing our seniors throughout Dorchester County, and especially in District 1. As Board member of the Dorchester Seniors, Inc. and the caregiver for my mother, I know the challenges seniors face with home healthcare, support for caregivers, transportation, navigating Medicare and Medicaid, assistance with technology, and the urgent need many seniors need with home repairs. We need to provide our seniors with more opportunities to enhance their educational, mental, social, spiritual, and physical wellbeing. WE need to work cooperatively with other community agencies, organizations, and the faith community through interagency coordination to ensure our seniors are not left behind or left alone.
